THE MANY FACES OF VENUS
Inspired by the upcoming A.G. Leventis Gallery exhibition, the Fine & Applied Arts Department proposed the design of a creative advertising campaign on the theme of Aphrodite. The campaign aims to promote Aphrodite in a unique visual way, as an idea, a myth, a goddess, a symbol, an experience, a woman, a history (and every other aspect that Aphrodite can be seen as) in the context of Cypriot culture, locality and life. The campaign should promote Aphrodite as a cultural commodity -much like a product, in this case a cultural product- in relation to the island of Cyprus. Think about it in terms of a ‘contemporary cultural tourist campaign’, where the audience –both locals and foreigners- will be inspired by the advertisement to learn/experience/live Aphrodite. In doing so, students are free to re-define the image / idea / symbol / story / myth / statue of Aphrodite, in developing a contemporary visual concept for an advertising campaign.

Research is vital for this project on many and varied levels such as: historically (mythological creature, goddess, archaeology, ancient art), culturally (impact of Aphrodite in Cypriot and/or international life & culture, references and impact in literature, film & theatre, influence on lifestyle), socially (feminism, beauty and gender, the idea of womanhood and motherhood), art & design (fashion design, Venus as a female symbol, artworks with direct reference to Venus, Aphrodite as a design & advertising icon).

The requirement is to develop a unique advertising concept.
